Michael Makarewicz , 87, of Wakefield died Saturday January 9 in Wilmington after a long period of failing health.

Born in Chelsea on June 11, 1923 he was the son of the late Sigmund and Victoria Makarewicz .

Mr. Makarewicz was raised in Chelsea and was a graduate of Chelsea High School. He later served in the U.S. Army during World War II and earned a Silver Star. He was a retired auto body mechanic from Time Oldsmobile of Arlington. He enjoyed Ballroom Dancing.

Mr. Makarewicz was the husband of the late Mary (Gudzovich). He was the father of Michael A. Makarewicz and Kenneth S. Makarewicz and his wife Linda all of Wakefield, Robert Z. Makarewicz of Beverly and David T. Makarewicz of Lawrence. He was the brother of Alexander Makarewicz of HI, Sophie Hicks of Everett, Mary Markiewicz of Woburn and the late Stella Handwerker. He is also survived by his grandchildren Christine, Michael , Kendra, Christine, Patricia, Joel, Amber, Robert, Jr. Mason, Nathan and Mariah.

A funeral service will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield Friday at 1:00 p.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
