Mitchell "Barry" Corbett passed on to his eternal rest September 10. He was 55 years old. The cause of death was renal failure stemming from a quarter century battle with Lupus.
Barry was born in Medford, Massachusetts on December 18, 1963, sharing a birthday with Keith Richards, of his all-time favorite band, The Rolling Stones.
He was the second child of
Mitchell
and Fay
Corbett
joining his older brother, Bernie. He lived all but his first seven months of his life in Stoneham, graduating from Stoneham High School, Class of 1982.
As a child Barry developed a profound love of animals from his Guinea pig Zeke to his Netherlands dwarf rabbit, Bun E who was an abiding presence in the
Corbett
household for more than a decade. Pets always bought great joy to Barry's life with one notable exception. Though he never had the pleasure of owning one he never missed a chance to visit an elephant his favorite animal.
A natural athlete Barry excelled at every sport he played. As a youth, hockey and baseball consumed a significant amount of his time. Soon tennis took over, first at the club level and later as a captain of the Stoneham High School team where he also lettered in football. Barry continued to play tennis regularly into adulthood until his declining health denied him the opportunity to get on the court.
A life-long sports fan Barry had the privilege of seeing his all-time favorite team the Montreal Canadiens win their most recent Stanley Cup in 1993 live at the hallowed Montreal Forum. Barry's all-time favorite athletes were Bjorn Borg, Mike Schmidt, Joe Montana, and Stephane Richer. He was an avid collector of all things related to his favored four.
Barry loved to drive his Mercedes convertible, Cape Cod, and all things Nike. The most consuming passion of his life was the Rolling Stones. From an early age Barry connected with the band, its music and their lead singer Mick Jagger, his all-time idol. First seeing the band live in 1978 at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, Barry saw them in concert many times over the next four decades, including shows at Madison Square Garden. His contribution to the book, "The Rolling Stones: 50 Licks" (Bloomsbury) celebrating the band's 50th Anniversary was one of his proudest accomplishments. Play "Gimme Shelter" LOUD in his memory.
He is survived by his brother Bernie and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A Graveside Service will be held at Lindenwood Cemetery, Montavle Ave., Stoneham on Monday at 11am. All are invited to attend.
