Norman P. Goguen, M.D., 80, of Lynnfield died on Tuesday, November 8 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading.
Born in Fitchburg on July 4, 1931 he was the son of the late Peter and Amelia (Mercier) Goguen.
Dr. Goguen was a graduate and Class President of Fitchburg High School, Class of 1949. He continues to hold the 100 yard dash record at the High School and was recently inducted into the Fitchburg High School Hall of Athletic Fame. Dr. Goguen was a graduate of Harvard University, 1953 and Tufts Medical School, 1957. He did his Internship at Bellevue Hospital, 1957-59, Columbia Surgical Division and his residency at Lahey Clinic, 1961-1962, Mass. Hospital School & Lakeville Hospital, 1962 – 1963 and Boston City Hospital, 1963 – 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Tarawa & CLG8 USS Topeka.
Dr. Goguen was President of Orthopedic Surgery, Inc. in Melrose and practiced orthopedic surgery at Malden Hospital and Melrose Wakefield Hospital for 35 years. He was a senior member of OSI until he retired 10 years ago.
Dr. Goguen was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Eastern Orthopedic Society and the Harvard Club. He was also a past Trustee of the Malden Y.M.C.A. and past president of the staff at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Dr. Goguen loved skiing, running and watching his tomatoes grow. He also enjoyed his 4th of July lobster family birthday party and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He was an avid cook.
Dr. Goguen was the husband of Jean M. (MacCracken) Goguen, his wife of 56 years. He was the father of Suzanne Will and her husband Eric of Mt. Vernon, NH, Elizabeth Scanley and her husband Stephen of New York, NY, Richard Goguen and wife Tiffany of Stow, MA and Christopher Goguen and his wife Jennifer of Lynnfield. He was the brother of Richard Goguen and his wife Christine of Newport Beach, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hannah and Ian Will, Collin and Dylan Scanley and Matthew, Emily and Olivia Goguen.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut St., Lynnfield at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
