, 71, died peacefully in his Lowell Street home on Wednesday, Dec. 14 after a brief illness.

Faler
was born in Worcester on Sept. 10, 1941 to

and Lena(Morello)
Faler
.
As a young adult, he became intrigued with the study of history, earning a B.A. from Southern Methodist University, and a Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin. He served as professor of American History at University of Massachusetts, Boston, from 1970 until his retirement in 2002. There he was known as a demanding but effective teacher, and in 1987 received the top national award from the American Historical Association for excellence in teaching.
Locally, Mr.
Faler
was well known for being active in civic affairs, serving on the Wakefield Board of Assessors intermittently between 1985 and 2011.
In addition to his interest in history, civic concerns, and his love for family, Mr.
Faler
exhibited great passion for gardening in his
extensive back yard. Many people have shared in the fresh produce emanating from his fruit trees and vegetable garden.

and his wife Bonnie of Wilmington, North Carolina also survive him.
Visiting hours will be held at McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. A private memorial service will be held at a later point to enable many long distance family and friends to share in a celebration of Mr. Faler's life.
