Philip F. McCarty, age 87, a longtime Wakefield resident, died Tuesday, June 5 at the Beverly Hospital.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 18, 1931, he was the son of the late J. Leo and Marie (O'Reilly) McCarty.
Mr. McCarty was raised in Minetto, NY and was a graduate of Oswego High School, Class of 1948. He received his bachelor's degree in Physics and Philosophy from the College of the Holy Cross in 1952. After graduating, Mr. McCarty served in the United States Army, and tested weapons in Nevada and the South Pacific. He was the retired owner of Andruss-Peskin Corporation.
Active in the Wakefield community, he served on the Finance Committee, the School Committee, and sat on the Boards of the Center for Performing Arts and the Americal Civic Center. In over three decades of public service, Mr. McCarty served to foster education, the arts, and good governance, and was recently honored with a portrait in Wakefield Town Hall.
He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret "Nina" (Hickey) McCarty. He was the loving father of Philip F. McCarty Jr. and wife Rita of North Smithfield, RI, Jacqueline Meekins and husband Jeffrey, Karen Carrier and husband John, Marian Joy Schilling and husband Jeffrey, all of Wakefield, Nancy Davis and husband Stephen of Danvers, and Andrea McCarty and husband Michael Kilkelly of Middletown, CT. He was the brother of Jack McCarty of FL, Robert McCarty, S.J., of NY, and the late Alice Kenyon. He is survived by 18 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and community, his great energy, and his engaging manner.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8pm. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery.
