Robert Hogg

Robert Thomas Hogg, 90, passed away June 11, 2012 at Winchester Hospital after a long fought battle with breathing problems associated with his many occupations.

He was born November 15, 1921, in Melrose, MA, the son of John McGeorge and Bertha Miller Hogg.

Robert (Bobby) lived in Wakefield all his life and graduated from Wakefield High School. Following graduation, he worked in a welding shop and several greenhouses. He then served in the Coast Guard during WWII. During his tour of duty, his ship transported troops. He almost went completely around the world, with the exception of the Suez Canal. While still in the service he married Phyllis Sanford of Melrose, MA. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before she predeceased him in 1995. When his tour of duty ended, he moved to Western Massachusetts, where he attended Stockbridge Agriculture College (now University of Massachusetts) He made a career out of landscape gardening and in latter years worked for Crystal Oil Co of Wakefield.

Bobby was an avid birdwatcher who spent many hours on Plum Island, and was one of the oldest members of the Brookline Bird Club. He enjoyed gardening and woodcarving. He was proud to sell his fresh produce and handmade art at many of the local farmer's markets, including Melrose, Ipswich, Topsfield, Lawrence, and Todd's Farm in Rowley. His limited edition nativities have been shipped all over the country and to Germany. He was extremely interested in the environment and in natural remedies. He was always excited to talk about the plants that he loved. He attributed his longevity to organic farming practices. A Boy Scout leader in Greenwood for many years, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and outdoors skills with his boys. Many weekends were spent camping and hiking the Mountains of New England, and especially loving the Vermont countryside.
Bobby is survived by his three daughters, Susanne Lizotte and husband John of Rex, GA, Trudy Durland and her husband Bruce of Wakefield, MA, Cynthia Clark and her husband David of Lebanon, CT, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
