Russell L. Edwards, 89, a Wakefield resident since 1949, died at his home on Monday, February 13.
Born in Salem on December 31, 1922, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Rebecca B. (Howarth) Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was raised in Lynnfield and was a graduate of Wakefield High School, class of 1941. He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1943 and completed his basic training in South Carolina. He entered the European Theatre of Operations in the spring of 1944. He served in the 36th Infantry (Texas) Division of the 142nd Regiment - Co. I. He fought in Italy, France and Germany and earned the rank of PFC. He was wounded in action in France and received the Purple Heart. He had also received the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement in Battle. Russell was a retired machinist for the American Publishers Supply Company of Lynnfield.
Mr. Edwards was the husband of Lorraine (Weyland) Edwards with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He was the father of Pamela A. Edwards of Wakefield, Stephen A. Edwards and his wife Carol of Portsmouth, NH and David R. Edwards and his wife Linda of Wilmington. He is also survived by his 4 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Wakefield-Lynnfield United Methodist Church, 273 Vernon St. Wakefield on Thursday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be at Forest Glade cemetery, Wakefield.
