Russell Mitchell

Russell L . Mitchell , 68, of Wakefield, surrounded by his family, died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 6, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Dayton, Ohio on September 7, 1939, he was the son of the late William T. and Esther M. (Mast) Mitchell .

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Mitchell was an armed guard with Wells Fargo in Wakefield. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and became a skilled genealogist. In 1988, he published the history of the Richards side of the family dating from the early 1800's in France, followed by a 2004 publication of the history of the Mitchell family dating from 1681 in County Down, Ireland.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virginia I. (Richards), his daughter, Karen S. Pierce and her husband, Michael, of Wakefield and three sons, Russell L . Mitchell , Jr. and his wife, Amanda, of Methuen, David A. Mitchell of Bedford, and Brian E. Mitchell of Lowell. He was the grandfather of seven grandchildren, Christopher Pierce, Sean Pierce, Nathan Pierce, Jessica Mitchell , Erin Mitchell , Lauren Mitchell and Breanna Mitchell .

He was predeceased by his sister, Cora M. ( Mitchell ) Wiggins and his brother, Robert J. Mitchell and is survived by his brothers, Rudolph R. Mitchell and Vern G. Mitchell .

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. Internment will be at Riverside Cemetery in North Reading.
