Ruth F. Gilman, 90, of Port Huron, MI and formerly Stoneham, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
Born in Stoneham on March 14, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John and Grace Gilman.
Ruth graduated from the Lawrence Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Medford. She received her RN certificate in 1943 and taught nursing for four years. She then attended Boston University and received a BSNE and MSN from the Catholic University of America. Mrs. Gilman continued to teach in schools of Nursing in Detroit, Washington, D.C., Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Dubuque and Sioux City, IO before moving to Port Huron, MI in 1973. Ruth was an administrator in the Mercy Hospital Department of Nursing for nine years until her retirement in 1983. She also taught at Georgetown University and Mercy College. Mrs. Gilman was the director of the National Council of Catholic Nurses and held offices in her Alumnae Association and American Nurses Association. Ruth was a member of the National League of Nursing Education, Pi Gamma Mu and Sigma Theta Tau.
Mrs. Gilman was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Community. She was also a member of the Secular Institute of Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ, founded in the USA in 1953.
She is survived by her nephew, William C. Hale. She was preceded in death by her two brothers: Robert Ludden and Paul F. Gilman; and her sister Dorothy C. (Eugene) Hale.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Monday, February 27th at St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Port Huron, MI. Interment took place in Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham. Local arrangements are in the care of the McDonald – Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St. Stoneham.
