Theodore J. Doherty Jr. “Ted” a longtime resident of Lynnfield passed Friday September 27, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Born in Boston, December 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary (LaPointe) Doherty of Dorchester. Beloved husband of the late Diana (DiCastro) Doherty. Loving father of Gregg Doherty, Keven Doherty and his wife Kristin, and Kerriann Doherty all of Lynnfield, and the late Scott Doherty. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Cameron, Ryan and Ben. He will be missed by his dog Charlie as well.
Ted was a graduate of Boston English High School and Suffolk University. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran. Ted was a member of the All Army Rifle Team for his skilled Marksmanship. After serving, he was an executive for Commercial Union Life Insurance for over 40 years.
Ted spent 41 years happily married to his beloved wife Diana. He enjoyed traveling with his family and shared many great memories with both family and friends. He was a lifetime member of the Wakefield Elks and a former President of Lynnfield Youth Hockey. He enjoyed softball and bowling. He was a Lionel Train enthusiast and was Head Conductor of the B&T Railway. Ted was an avid golfer with 2 holes in one to his name and also earned MVP status in his Tuesday night league.
His additional joys in life were sports and his grandchildren. As a coach, he was always driving kids to games and helping behind the bench. Ted was a familiar face on the sidelines and at the rinks as he was Cam, Ry and Ben’s biggest fan. He was a presence at hockey, baseball, football and field hockey attending games even through this fall. His laughter and quick wit was infectious. Ted’s comedic timing was truly a gift. His smile and jokes will be remembered just as much as his love of Schlitz and his ability to warm the hearts of many. A legend of a man that will truly be missed by all who knew him.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut St., Lynnfield on Wednesday October 2 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday October 1 from 4-7 p.m.
