Thomas J. McGagh, 86, of Stoneham, died peacefully on Saturday, September 17 at the Bear Hill Rehabilitation Center in Wakefield.
Born in Dorchester on July 9, 1925, he was the son of the late Martin J. and Nora K. (McLoughlin) McGagh, both originally from Ireland.
Tom had been a Stoneham resident since 1970. Margie and Tom were happily married for 40 years and members of St. Patrick Parish in Stoneham. Tom began the first of two stints in the U.S. Army at age 18 when he served in the Army Air Corp. for two years at the end of WWII. He joined the Army again at age 26, and served for almost two years with the 1st Calvary Division of the U.S. Army Artillery in Korea.
Tom was a graduate of Boston English High School, received his BSBA from Boston College, MBA from Northeastern University, CPA from Bentley University, and LL.D from Suffolk University Law School. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, and spending summers on Cape Cod. Tom had been retired from the IRS for the last 20 years, and enjoyed watching his kids grow up and spent lots of time with his family.
Tom McGagh is survived by his wife Marguerite "Margie" (Fardy), his son Michael M. McGagh and his wife Christine (Burns) of Woburn, his daughter Nancy A. McGagh of Stoneham, his two sisters Mary McGagh of Somerville and Ann Roddy of NJ, his brother John P. McGagh of Winthrop and his grandson Thomas Michael McGagh. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Tom was also the brother of his late sister Thérèse Griffiths.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham on Wednesday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St, Stoneham at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8pm.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
