Walter P. Comeau Jr.

Walter P. Comeau, Jr., “Wally”, passed away with his loving family by his side on November 23rd due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 84.

Wally was born and raised in Melrose, oldest child of the late Walter P. Comeau and Lillian (Wyeth) Comeau. He was a 1959 graduate of Melrose High School and enjoyed going to many of the reunions over the years. After graduation, Wally enlisted in the Navy and proudly served our country for four years. He completed his military training in Yuma, Arizona and was then assigned to the naval station in Virginia Beach. Upon his return home, his sister Barbie introduced him to her best friend, Sue. It was love at first sight and a year later, Wally and Sue were married on August 1, 1964. He worked as a Letter Carrier for the Post Office in Medford for 27 years until he took early retirement at age 58. He then worked full time at Graphique de France with his daughter Karen and his last job was as a part time driver for Active Day Adult Daycare until he completely retired.

Wally was very proud of his military service with the US Navy. He was a Post Commander and Life Member of Melrose Post #2394 VFW and also a Life Member of Amvets Post 21 Melrose. He volunteered hundreds of hours helping veterans, running VA hospital parties, marched in numerous parades, participated in honor guards for fallen veterans, managed the Patriot Pen program for high school students in District 18, and participated in the annual Poppy Drive. He would do anything he could do to help a veteran.

Wally also enjoyed traveling the world with Sue, they went on eleven cruises. The cruise they took to Italy with his brother Dick and his wife Sharon was their favorite. He treasured spending time with his kids and grandkids, especially Sunday dinners. He could always be found on the sidelines cheering on his grandsons at their baseball and basketball games and cross country meets. Wally enjoyed summers in Maine with his family and friends. He had a love of fixing things around the house.

Wally leaves behind his beloved wife, Sue. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in August. He was a loving Dad to his three children, Michael Comeau and Dave Comeau and his wife Maureen, and Karen Smith and her husband Al. Cherished Papa to his four grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Alex Smith, Kaitlyn Comeau, and Shawn Comeau. He is also survived by his four younger siblings, Dick Comeau, Barbie Stronach, Bill Comeau and his wife Diane, and Ed Comeau and his wife Doreen, and his sister-in-law Joan Dean and brother-in-law Arthur Bourrell. Wally also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Sharon Comeau and brother-in-law Peter Stronach.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, aides, and support staff at Vantage Health for the compassion, caring, and kindness that they provided to Wally during the final stage of Alzheimer’s.

His Funeral Service will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday November 30 at 12:00 p.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
