Walter V. Maloney, Jr., 83, retired chief of Wakefield Fire Department, a life long resident of Wakefield died on Friday, August 5 at the Wakefield Care and Rehab. as a result of pancreatic cancer.
Born in Melrose on August 9, 1927 he was the son of the late Walter V. and Helen (Tabot) Maloney.
Chief Maloney was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1945. He also attended North Shore Community College. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a Wakefield Firefighter for 44 years. He was Chief of the Wakefield Fire Department for 22 years (1970 – 1992). He was also and employee of Investors Capital in Lynnfield for 10 years.
His love of family, firefighting, Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots were evident in his life. He enjoyed family get togethers, vacationing on the ocean especially Drakes Island in Maine and Kanes Donuts in Saugus. He looked forward to donuts and coffee on Sundays and watching the "games". He also loved golf trips with his son to New Hampshire.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marguerite E. (Donovan) Maloney, his children; Susan Maloney Dennett of Georgetown, Maureen Maloney Jenks and her fiancée Mark Abrams of Haverhill, NH, Walter V Maloney III and his wife Tracey of Wakefield, MaryAnn Maloney Brennan of Wakefield, Michelle Maloney Pruskin and her husband Marc of Marlborough and Marguerite Donovan Maloney of Wakefield. His grandchildren; Maura Jenks of Enfield, NH, Sarah Dennett Paniagua of Lawrence, Specialist Ryan M. Jenks of Fort Drum, NY, Katelyn M. Dennett of Byfield, Jillian M. Maloney, Kelsey M. Maloney, Abigal D. Maloney, Jade M. Brennan and Morgan E. Brennan all of Wakefield and Garrett M. and Avery R. Pruskin of Marlborough. His great grandchildren; Hayden Jenks of Enfield, NH and Christian, Julian and Cameron Paniagua of Lawrence. He is also survived by his brother, Roger Maloney and his wife Maureen, his nephew Michael Maloney and his wife Anne and his niece Anne Lucey and her husband Paul all of Wakefield.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
