William George "Billy" Caton of Wakefield, Massachusetts, passed away on November 26, 2022, after a brief illness. He was 79 years old.
Billy - he rarely went by William - is survived by his wife, Phyllis Caton née Bryson; his sister Kathleen Lepore and her husband John; his sisters-in-law Bonnie-Ellen Bryson and Theresa Caton; nephew John Caton , Jr. and his wife Denise, his niece Cynthia Erb and her husband John, his niece Kristen Hughes, his niece Julie-Ann Bryson and her husband Brant, his niece Amy Bryson and her husband Chris, and his niece Robin St. Germain. He leaves behind an extended loving family of grandnieces, grandnephews, and neighbors who felt more like family. He is predeceased by his younger brother John "Jack" Caton and his brother-in-law William Bryson.
Born in Boston and raised in Revere, Massachusetts, Billy was a third-generation fire sprinkler fitter and a proud member of the Sprinkler Fitters union, Local 550. He was a man of many skills and hobbies - an inveterate putterer and a voracious reader who also loved assembling model ships, gardening in his yard, raising and caring for dogs (both his own and those of his loved ones), and keeping his cars in a state of high shine. A quiet man, he nonetheless possessed a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. He did not suffer fools but would do anything for his friends and especially for his family.
Billy married Phyllis in 1964 at Our Lady of Grace Church in Chelsea, Massachusetts. At the time, he was only 20 years old. They spent the next 58 years together; practically their entire lives. In retirement, they traveled to nearly every corner of the globe - to ports throughout Europe and South America and the Caribbean. They wintered in Florida and barbequed by their pool in the summer. It was a great life and he lived it well.
Billy was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Wakefield.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield prior to the mass from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
The family requests that those wishing to remember Billy's life make a donation in his memory to Bread of Life (109 Madison Street, Malden MA 02148 or BreadofLifeMalden.org) or Wakefield Food Pantry (467 Main Street, Wakefield MA or WakefieldFoodPantry.org) in lieu of sending flowers.
