William Gile

William Gile

William O. Gile, 93 of Lancaster, MA and formerly of Wakefield died Monday May 21 in Lancaster. Born on September 29, 1918 he was the son of the late William A. & Lilla M. (Osgood) Gile. Bill lived in Stoneham MA from September 29, 1918 until when he moved to Wakefield with his bride Vera (Graham). They had 3 children and lived on Meriam St. in Wakefield until May 23, 2008 when he moved to Lancaster to live with his daughter.

Bill graduated from Stoneham High School in 1937 and began an apprentice course at General Electric that same year. He remained employed at GE of Lynn until his retirement in 1979. His hobbies were gardening machine shop work, woodworking and reading

Active for many years in the First Congregational Church of Melrose, he had also been active in the Greenwood Union Church of Wakefield. Bill was among the first elementary school volunteers to teach computing (programming and later word processing) to the school children in both Greenwood and the Franklin Schools.

Having served on the Hartshorne House Board and also volunteered as a tax preparer for the elderly through the Council of Aging, Bill loved his community and participated in its endeavors.

Mr. Gile was the husband of the late Vera Eugenie (Graham) Gile. He was the father of Marjorie Ness and her husband William of Lancaster and the late William H. Gile and Barbara Jeanne Gile. He was the grandfather of William C. Gile of Leominster, Stacia Nordin of Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa, Michael P. Gile of Jay, NY, Rodd Rumsey of Plainwell, MI and Shariann Forker of LaPorte, IN and the great grandfather of Joshua and Elizabeth Rumsey, Khalidwe Nordin, Brenton and Justin Forker, and Althea Garrett Gile. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Tydeman of Kalamazoo, MI and 5 nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster Street, Melrose on Thursday May 31 at 1:00pm. A luncheon will be provided prior to the service held at 11:30 at the church. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday from 6-8pm. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to The Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield P. O. Box 321 Wakefield, MA 01880 c/o the Barbara Jeanne Gile Memorial Scholarship Fund which assists students in musical studies, and to the First Congregational Church, Melrose.
