William C . McElhaney , age 86, of Woburn, formerly of Stoneham, died Sunday, Veteran's Day, November 11, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born in Fort Payne, AL on March 17, 1932 he was the son of the late Jewel and Hattie (Coley) McElhaney .
Mr. McElhaney was born and raised in Alabama. After completing high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. While on leave, he met his late wife, Dorothy Cartwright, walking along Revere Beach. Together they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage and raised their family in Woburn. Mr. McElhaney had worked as a machinist for General Tire for more than 30 years; working hard to provide for his family and to be the best parent and grandparent he could be. He cherished his role as a family man, taking great pleasure in attending the sporting events of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also loved his pets, especially his dogs.
He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy A. (Cartwright) McElhaney . He was the loving father of Joni A. Geraigery and her husband Wadie of Woburn, William S. McElhaney and his wife Wilma Rose of Worcester, and Timothy M. McElhaney and his wife Judy of Billerica. He was the brother of Clifford McElhaney of Fort Payne, AL, Mary Jo Finch of Langston, AL, and the late LH McElhaney , Otha Thornberry, Hoyt McElhaney , Bea Thompson, and Marie Thornberry. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
His Funeral Services will be private. Arrangements in the care of the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, Stoneham.
