Zabel Kalandjian , 98, died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the Woburn Nursing Center.
Mrs. Kalandjian was born in Alexandria, Turkey (now Iskenderun) on March 25, 1916. During the massacre in 1916, Zabel was found as an orphan and lived in the Misdavis Orphanage until 1931. She was taken in by a priest and his wife, where she lived with their family for ten years in Beirut, Lebanon. She then married Roupen Kalandjian; they were married for 20 years and had three daughters and a son. She moved to Boston in 1969 with her daughter and lived in Wakefield for 40 years before moving to Chicago for eight years, and later moving back to Wakefield.
Mrs. Kalandjian is survived by her children Harry Kalandjian of Chicago, IL, Armig Dakessian of Chicago, IL, Marita Ohannessian of Stoneham, and Tamis Kakkad of Pelham, NH. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Her funeral mass will be celebrated at the St. Stephen's Armenian Church, 38 Elton Ave., Watertown on Monday at 10 a.m. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave, Wakefield on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
